Laparoscopic (Minimally Invasive) surgery in India

Laparoscopic surgery in India

Laparoscopic or "Minimal Access Surgery" is a specialized technique for performing surgery. In traditional "open" surgery the surgeon uses a single incision whereas Laparoscopic surgery uses several 0.5-1cm incisions. Each incision is called a "port." At each port a tubular instrument known as a trochar and cannulla is inserted. Specialized instruments and a special telescope known as a laparoscope are passed through the port during the procedure.

The laparoscope transmits images from the body to high-resolution video monitors through a digital advanced camera system in the operating room. During the operation the surgeon watches detailed images of the part on the high resolution monitor. This system allows the surgeon to perform the same operations as traditional surgery but with smaller multiple incisions.

Advantages of laparoscopic surgery

  •   Less painful
  •   Short hospital stay
  •   Quick recovery
  •   Early resume of activities
  •   Less scarring
  •   Better cosmetic results

Compared to traditional open surgery, patients experience less pain, an earlier recovery, and less scarring with laparoscopic surgery.

Operations which can be performed using laparoscopic surgery

Most of the abdominal advanced surgeries can be performed using the laparoscopic technique in experienced hand. These include surgery for gallbladder, duodenal perforation, appendicitis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, cancer, rectal prolapse and severe constipation.

Thanks to a breakthrough surgical technology, there is a new category of minimally invasive surgery called Robotic surgery. It is an effective, minimally invasive alternative to both open surgery and laparoscopy. Through the use of Robotic surgical system, surgeons now offer a minimally invasive option for complex surgical procedures.

The robotic surgery system used at Indian hospitals are da Vinci surgical systems.

Da Vinci Robotic surgical System is a sophisticated robotic platform designed to expand the surgeon's capabilities and offer a minimally invasive option for major surgery.

With da Vinci robotic surgery, small incisions are used to introduce miniaturized wristed instruments and a high-definition 3D camera. Seated comfortably at the da Vinci console, the surgeon views a magnified, high-resolution 3D image of the surgical site. At the same time, state-of-the-art robotic and computer technologies scale, filter and seamlessly translate the surgeon's hand movements into precise micro-movements of the Robotic instruments. The da Vinci robotic System cannot be programmed and it cannot make decisions on its own. The Robotic System requires that every surgical maneuver be performed with direct input from the surgeon.

The robotic surgeries have provided break through success in Cardiac, Urology & Gynaecology Surgeries.

The advantages of robotic surgery are

Robotic surgery allows surgeons to operate through infinitely smaller incisions, resulting in significantly less pain, scarring and recovery time for patients. In addition to a shorter hospital stay, the minimally invasive approach offers other advantages to patients including less risk of infection, less blood loss, fewer transfusions and a quicker return to normal activities.

For the surgeon, the computer-enhanced technology and robotic precision ensure a level of surgical precision never before possible.

  •   10-12 fold magnification of the surgical field
  •   3D vision precision due to seven degrees of freedom of movement of robotic instruments
  •   Motion scaling and filtering hand movements of the surgeon.

Thus, the surgical robot facilitates advanced surgical and reconstructive procedures with greater precision and accuracy.
